Frequently Asked Questions
This section will provide answers to questions you may have about the Des Moines Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Des Moines Race for the Cure. You can go to sections for General Information, the Race, Race Registration, or display All Frequently Asked Questions.

- How early can I arrive at the race site on race day?
- A.
Race day registration will begin at 7 AM. Sponsor tents are scheduled to open at 8 AM.

- I have signed-up for a timed race. How do I pick-up my timer device and what do I do with it after the race?
- A.
Timed runners will be given a timing chip with their race bib. Please check your bag at packet pickup to ensure you received your timing chip. The timing chip will be retreived from each runner after they go through the timing chute.

- When will online race registration begin?

Online race registratrion will begin on Friday, August 8, 2008.

- I am interested in volunteering with the Des Moines Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Who do I contact?
- A.
If you are a first-time volunteer, you can login to the Komen Des Moines website, build a profile, and at the bottom of the profile screen, select I Wan to Volunteer. You will be asked to accept a volunteer waiver. When the My Volunteering screen displays, it will give you a list of volunteer opportunities available.
If you have already created a profile on our website, login to the website (click on Login on the top right of this screen. A user name and password box displays.) After logging in, click on Volunteer on the top right of this screen. When the My Volunteering screen displays, it will give you a list of volunteer opportunities available.

The 17th Annual Des Moines Race for the Cure will be Saturday, October 25, 2008, at West Capitol Terrace on the west lawn of the Iowa State Capitol Building.

- Where does the money go that is raised by the Des Moines Race for the Cure?
- A.
Komen Race for the Cure® Benefits Iowans.
The Komen Race for the Cure® funds provide no-cost mammograms for women and men in need of financial assistance in our community. This program has provided mammograms to more than 5,000 Iowans in the past 10 years. Data collected by the Polk County Department of Health indicates that of these people, 10% have needed further testing or treatment.
The funds also provide breast health education and grants to Iowans throughout the Des Moines Affiliate's 81 counties.

- Is there pink ribbon merchandise available for sale at the race?

Pink for a Cure will have merchandise available at Shirt Pick-Up at Southridge Mall and on Race Day. Proceeds benefit the Des Moines Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
Cash, checks and Credit Card payments for Pink Ribbon Merchandise will be accepted.

- Who can participate in the Des Moines Race for the Cure?

As well as being a competitive road race for serious runners, the Komen Race for the Cure® is an emotional and celebratory event attracting many families, friends, recreational runners and walkers. This is an opportunity for thousands of women and men to join in the fight against breast cancer here in our own community.
Join over 21,000 expected participants for the 17th Annual Komen Race for the Cure® in Des Moines.

Wednesday, October 15, from noon to 8 pm
Thursday, October 16, from noon to 8 pm
Friday, October 17, from noon to 8 pm
Saturday, October 18, from 9 am to 5 pm
A team representative should pick up the team Race T-shirts at the Komen Office at Southridge Mall, SE 14th & Army Post Road, Des Moines. The Komen Office is on the east end of the mall near Sears. Team captains, please check the contents of your team packets before you leave the Komen office to ensure you have all of the items you need for your team.

- Is there a charge to be timed for the Race for the Cure?

Timing
To be eligible for medal awards, you must select to be timed for the race. Each timed race participant will be charged an additional $2 for the race and will receive a chip device in their race packet. The chips will be retrieved at the race finish line. The timing is a race time.
Please note: If a survivor wishes to be timed, they just go through the timing chute at the race finish line.
